Commitment is More Important than Love

Love comes and goes, according to our moods, circumstances, and the effort we put behind it. No marriage in the world will survive through a lifetime with the full presence of love at all times. And it won't even have love present MOST of the time unless there is a high degree of commitment to back it up.

Fidelity only happens if a couple is more committed to each other than to the emotion of the moment.

Harsh words are never overcome unless you have the commitment to return, forgive, apologize, and then refocus on loving behaviors.

Love dies if it is not fed with kind words, forgiveness, kind actions, daily contact, and compromise. Each requires commitment to sustain.

To survive, each party must put the marriage before their own wants. That is a hard thing to do, and most marriages that fail, do so because they could not commit to that.

Marriage is not sustainable unless you do some things you do not want to do. You have to compromise when you do not want to. You have to apologize when you don't want to. You have to say "I love you" when it may not be convenient. You have to work for your spouse when you do not feel like it. You cannot make yourself do those things unless you are committed to something more than just yourself.

Love is the benefit that we receive from commitment. Love is the glue that holds a couple together, but it must be fed by actions that only come from a committed heart.
