Loving Gestures

He isn't charming at all. He hates to buy me birthday presents, and doesn't like to have to get me anything for Christmas either, unless I make him a list. He doesn't quite know how to be romantic, even though I think he'd like to know.

But on cold winter mornings, when he knows I am going to use the car, he warms it up and cleans the ice off of it.

If I am going on a trip, he makes sure the oil is topped off, and that the radiator fluid is not low.

He does our laundry, and always has (the kids do their own). If I run out of something, he does an extra load in the middle of the week, without being asked.

If he is away from home for the night, he calls, sounding lonely.

When I am traveling, he checks the weather in the cities I'll be in, and lets me know what to expect.

He emails me items for the shopping list - because he knows I'll forget, and because he knows I'll check my email.

Seems a lot of his care and concern comes out in things he does for my car. But to him, that car represents my safety. Took me a while to see that he is just being thoughtful in a different way.

We've been married for 23 years. He takes care of me in ways that make sense to him. And I have had to learn what they really mean.
