She Says She Cannot Hear

My sister says she cannot hear the inspiration of the Lord to do good things. She says she is never quite certain of whether she is getting it right or not.

The night I knew I had to take my son the hospital (right before his diagnosis of Leukemia), I prayed for the money to take the trip with him to Salt Lake. The next morning, I went to the post office, and found a box from my sister.

The box contained a wall hanging she had sewn for us - it had a stain on it. So she included a little baggie of stain remover. She said she wanted to clean the stain, but had felt that she should send the box right away instead.

The box also contained a computer part that she said I could sell, and a $100 bill. We live an hour from the bank, which is in the opposite direction from the hospital. She did not know why she put in cash instead of a check, she just felt she needed to.

I think she hears just fine. I think that the inspiration of the Lord is close enough to the desires of her own heart, that it is not unexpected when it comes, and that it is perfectly natural for her to act on it.

I never cleaned the stain from the wall hanging. I didn't have the time at first. Then when we got ready to hang it on the wall, it was not visible. But I'd have been pleased to leave that stain there. Because it seems a fitting way to remember her unquestioning action, about something that did not make sense to her then, but which became perfectly clear five days later.
