The Power of a Kind Word

There have been many times in my life when things were just HARD. So hard that it was difficult to feel good about anything I was doing.

I had seven children rather close together. Life was pretty intense, money was tight, and we had many difficulties. Even when the kids were older, and money was not so scarce, things still were hard a lot - the nature of the problem changed, but the substance was still a difficult challenge.

Sometimes, the thing that made me able to pick up and keep going was a kind word from someone else. And sometimes that kind word came from a stranger, frequently in passing, and often someone who never knew that their smile, or comment made my day more endurable.

It doesn't take much to help someone, whether you know them or not. I know, in many larger cities, you cannot behave with the same freedom that you can out in the smaller communities of the US, but there are still opportunities around you to do small kindnesses that can make a difference.

The cashier that looked at my kids and said, "How wonderful! Big families are great!"

The nurse that listened to me after my daughter died.

The woman in the restaurant who told me how impressed she was with our children's behavior.

The emails from people that come in from my websites, saying "Thanks", or telling me what a great daughter I had in Sidney.

None of those are big things, yet they stick with me because they mattered at a time when I needed it.

See, one day, your thank you may just be another in a long string. But another day, to another person, it may be the thing that they remember, because it meant far more than you could ever suspect it would.
