Selflessness - A Crying Social Need

Virtually all of our social problems in this day can be traced back to selfishness on the part of one or more individuals.

Divorce results from people putting their own wants above the needs of the relationship. Not to say that everyone who is divorced is selfish (it does take two people cooperating to make a marriage work), just that divorce is ALWAYS the result of selfishness somewhere.

Poverty results from both an unwillingness on the part of some people to work, and an unwillingness on the part of others to share.

Abortion is the direct result of selfishness on the part of the mother, and sometimes the father or extended family. Unselfish people do not kill a baby in an attempt to spare themselves from some trouble or other.

Abuse is unquestionably a selfish behavior, and drug and alcohol abuse are self centered indulgences, engaged in at the expense of others.

Our crowded tort courts and the frivolous lawsuits that fill them are also selfish, encouraged by greedy lawyers who are willing to represent anyone if there is likely to be a large payoff.

Gang growth is the result of selfish parents who neglect their children, and selfish leaders who seek power from their followers. They then take what they want, and seek revenge for imagined slights in a selfish effort to justify their own cruel desires.

Growing fraud and crime rates come from people who see their own wants as being more important than anyone else's.

The golden rule is very simple: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Nowhere in that is there an excuse for revenge, cruelty, neglect, murder, laziness, fraud, or dishonesty. It is the epitome of selflessness - thinking first of the comfort and wellbeing of others.

If it were the governing rule of all, our social ills would evaporate.
