The Importance of Time

In the 70s and 80s, people began to say that you did not need lots of time, as long as it was good time - "Quality time over Quantity time" was the catch phrase.

Then in the 90s, study after study proved that you could not plan Quality time. In order to get Quality time, you had to have plenty of Quantity. The best moments just happen in the midst of ordinariness, and cannot be scheduled.

In the new century, we quietly ignore the evidence that tells us to spend more time with our family, because it is not something a busy parent really wishes to hear!

Some of the best moments with my kids have happened when I was not focused on them - we were both just "there".

And travel time. Something about getting a kid alone with you in a car, driving somewhere. This we know, because in Wyoming we have a LOT of car time! It is an hour to the grocery store!

We sing in the car also, and have great science and philosophy lessons while driving. We take the time to assemble once a day as a family also, as much as we can (sometimes somebody is out for the time).

Often, when we start feeling irritated with our family members, it is not because we are around them too much, it is because we need MORE time with them. Unfortunately, that irritation makes us feel like we want to get away from them! Usually, it will resolve within a week or so if we just try to find more time together.

My family members are my favorite people. Yes, they have more ability to irritate me than anyone else, but they are also the source of a great deal of fun, laughter, and enjoyment.
